Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue(tm), Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), ALL VOLUNTEER greyhound adoption organization, specializing in personal adoption services that are rendered in a friendly, relaxed, and informative atmosphere. We do our best to create an inviting, people-friendly environment to educate people about greyhounds before, during, and after adoption. We are committed to making successful matches of personality and lifestyle between hounds and homes. If possible, we work with adopters' personal preferences for color and age. We personally answer phone calls and make every effort to answer all inquiries within a day or two. We do our best to keep adopters from wondering about their status and usually turn around applications within a week. We bring adopters into the process so they aren't intimidated or left waiting.

GEGR originally planned to adopt out about 12 dogs a year, but we've grown so much that we've been able to place an average of 100 dogs annually. We have met so many wonderful people along the way - as well as some very memorable and loving Greyhounds. We LOVE what we do and it shows!

About Our Dogs
Greyhounds are retired from racing at ages 18 mos - 5yrs. Since these dogs have an average lifespan of 13-15 years, owning a greyhound is an extended commitment!

Seabrook REGAP

Chris Makepeace gives Sophie a bath to prepare her for her new home as Kate looks on.

We take in many of our dogs from the REGAP program in Seabrook NH. REGAP is run by Chris Makepeace and is part of Seabrook Greyhound Park. Seabrook Greyhound Park requires all dogs that retire while racing there enter into their REGAP program to find homes, unless the dog's owner wishes to send them to a breeding farm.

We choose to work with the REGAP program because we support their desire to ensure that the greyhounds find homes. Also, with more than 20 years of experience with greyhounds, Chris Makepeace does an outstanding job personality testing the dogs in her care.

GPA Daytona Beach
GPA/Daytona Beach Logo

We take in dogs from GPA/Daytona Beach in Daytona Beach, Florida, when we can. Also located on-site at a racetrack, GPA/Daytona's kennel space is sponsored by the Daytona Beach Kennel Club. With thousands of dogs available at any given time in Florida, it's important to help move these dogs to states that don't have race tracks so they can find homes faster and not spend years waiting for space in adoption kennels down south.

The Farm
Greyhound Breeding Farm

"The Farm" is a Greyhound breeding facility located in Northern Florida. It has been family-owned and operated for over 30 years. The dogs on the farm come from many different walks of life, all ending with the same common goal: to find their forever home. Some dogs are retired racers from tracks in Florida and Alabama that have returned to the farm to wait for an open space in an adoption group. With the abundance of retired racers in Florida, this can sometimes take years. Others were injured as puppies, either in everyday activities or while in training, and others just aren't cut out for racing. Stud males and brood "mamas" are also on the farm, having completed their duties, and they are now ready for the couch. All of the dogs are cared for as if they are the owners' personal pets. They receive hands-on interaction daily.

Below is a message from Deb Johnson who founded GEGR in 2002 and left the group in 2004.

The first time you see a graceful, calm, and, yes, skinny Greyhound, you are hooked! This is how it was for me. I will never forget seeing a couple and their three Greys standing in the 90* + heat waiting their turn at the local Rabies Clinic. All around them were loudly barking, nervous dogs and chaos, but their Greys stood quietly waiting their turns. I was in awe and this awe led me into the wonderful world of Retired Racing Greyhound Adoption.

Reuben was my first Greyhound - a quivering, quaking mess of a large, skinny boy. With love and good food, he quickly became quite the showman - loving to roo to Garth Brook's rendition of Happy Birthday for any and all crowds! Faelon and then Phoebe came my way and, before I knew it, I was volunteering for two area adoption groups, learning as much as I could about the adoption business.

I remember standing in an airport in St. Louis in front of a large poster urging Greyhound Adoptions and hearing a woman say, "I hear they are great dogs but the groups make you jump through too many hoops." That statement, coupled with some of my own experiences with adoptions, planted a seed for a dream. With the support of the two groups I had volunteered for, I soon felt I had a vision of how I would like adoptions to be done and that would also fill a need in the adoption world. My goal was to do adoptions based on common sense and with the emphasis on good people skills, designed to educate the public on good ownership. I felt that with the right education and support, more people would become wonderful Greyhound owners.

With more passion and excitement than experience, I started my own little adoption group with the hopes I would adopt out about 12 hounds a year. I was blessed with the friendship of the most devoted Greyhound Diva - Chris Makepeace of Seabrook Greyhound Park in NH. She taught me more than I ever could have imagined and sent me hand-picked dogs to insure my success! I have never worked harder - often 60-70 hours a week - but also never had more fun and fulfillment. I learned so much from so many along the way and hopefully imparted my love and excitement of the breed as well.

My mission was rewarded with nearly two hundred adoptions in two years; we were on the right track! My time spent at the helm of GEGR was life changing and will never be forgotten. I have met so many wonderful people and hounds along the way. My life has been enriched as much as the lives of the hounds we adopted into loving homes! Even though I have moved out of state now to begin a new chapter in my life's adventure, I will always treasure my time knee deep in the Greyhound adoption world. I am so very grateful to the most wonderful volunteers who have taken on the mission to continue the wonderful work of GEGR and have grown it even further and higher than I ever dreamed possible. I am a very fortunate woman!
